California Latina Book Club

Our California Latina book club (#CLBookClub) reads a different Latinx book each month and hosts weekly virtual discussions. Our book club is free, volunteer-run, and focuses on Latina voices, and often features discussions with the authors.

#CLBookClub started in 2020 in response to the COVID shutdown, which affected Chicas Latinas de Sacramento‘s in-person community efforts. As a way for our membership to stay connected and continue supporting la cultura y la comunidad, I started #CLBookClub. Our Latina community now lives on Discord — and reaches far beyond Sacramento.

About Chicas Latinas de Sacramento

Chicas Latinas de Sacramento was the community’s premier 501(c)(3) Latina leadership nonprofit organization, founded in 2009, with a mission to increase Latina-powered volunteerism, leadership, and civic engagement by serving the local community.

Angela Chavez led the organization as its founding director for over 15 years, “creating a culture of volunteerism and civic engagement in our community, one Latina-Powered Project at a time,” before stepping down in January 2024.

In community, you joined me in:

  • Providing thousands of dollars in scholarships via our annual $2,000 undergraduate scholarship awards,
  • Providing over 5,000 new pairs of shoes for local elementary students,
  • Hosting countless community drives, from laptops for middle school students and Spanish-language books for elementary students to holiday drives for women, cancer patients, and our unhoused community, to bras for unhoused and expectant mothers,
  • Volunteering and supporting countless Sacramento Latinx events,
  • Reading 45+ Latinx novels,
  • Discovering our collective and individual powers.

Together, we created a culture of volunteerism, civic engagement, and leadership in our community, one Latina-powered project at a time ✊🏽 I’m so proud of the work we accomplished.

Chicas Latinas de Sacramento’s legacy lives in each one of us!
